About ALFA International in Australasia
With the Australian and New Zealand economies performing robustly by world standards, businesses that are looking for growth opportunities in a low-risk environment choose Australia and New Zealand as regions in which to invest. The growth of both economies is underpinned by their strong trade ties with Asia, Europe and the Americas as well as by having one of the world’s closest free-trade agreements. As Australia and New Zealand continually accelerate their political and corporate engagement with Asia — in particular China — this is opening new and growing markets for local businesses.
The Australasian member firms of ALFA International work collaboratively across the Australasia region. The Australasian group consists of six highly regarded law firms based in Australia and New Zealand. Each law firm has the resources and experience to meet clients’ legal requirements across the Australasia region in each key jurisdiction with:
- Anthony Harper based in New Zealand (Auckland and Christchurch);
- Cornwall Stodart, the member firm for Victoria, also being able to advise on matters arising in Tasmania;
- Cowell Clarke, the member firm for South Australia, also being able to advise on matters arising in the Northern Territory;
- Meyer Vandenberg, the member firm for the Australian Capital Territory;
- Mills Oakley, the member firm for Western Australia; and
- TressCox Lawyers, the member firm for both New South Wales
In order to make client service easier and quicker, the Australasian member firms of ALFA International have adopted a seamless process to eliminate double handling of matters. As a result, contact partners at each Australasian member firm have a detailed knowledge of the capabilities of each other Australasian member firm and will refer a potential client to the best person to handle their particular enquiry. The Australasian member firms currently act for a full range of enterprises – from local business operators to the largest Fortune 500 multi-national corporations.
Businesses in Australasia increasingly need legal assistance internationally, as their operations continue to expand into other countries. With one call to a local Australasian member firm of ALFA International, clients can be immediately introduced to an international member firm and be confident that the firm chosen has the necessary skills, expertise and commitment to deal with their matter. This takes the effort, risk and time delay out of hiring foreign legal counsel.
ALFA International’s principal philosophy is that member firms must provide quality legal services economically and on time. This means that all member firms have to undergo a rigorous evaluation process before being invited to join ALFA International. ALFA International selects and supports a single, outstanding law firm to represent the organisation in each metropolitan area or state.
The Australasian member firms of ALFA International have created general reference materials to help businesses understand the laws in Australia and New Zealand.
These publications are intended to provide an overview of key legal issues on subjects that lawyers, litigation management professionals, and in-house counsel confront on a regular basis.

ALFA International Law Firms of the Year 2012
The Australasian member firms in Australia have been named ALFA International Firms of the Year for 2012 in recognition of their “outstanding contributions to the [ALFA] Organisation”. In a letter from the Chairman of the Board or Directors, it has been recognised that the Australian group has “pioneered the concept of regional cooperation amongst ALFA International Law Firms” which has now been emulated by other regional practice groups.
